Subfamily Nematinae

Tribe Cladiini

Genus Cladius

A very confusing group regarding taxonomic change, and some older records are at risk of having been misplaced. [I still haven’t unpicked some old names in dataset]

Cladius pectinicornis (includes previously separated C. difformis) – appears common, with recent records from Shotesham, Horsey, Great Yarmouth. Occurs on Rosa, Fragaria, Sanguisorba, Comarum, Filipendula (etc?)

Cladius brullei (was Priophorus brullei) – a number of 20th century records, more recently Holme in 2018. Larvae on Rubus (esp idaeus), Sorbus aucuparia.

Cladius compressicornis (was Priophorus pallipes) – apparently quite common, with recent records from Wayland Wood, Shotesham, Waxham and Thetford. Larvae on rosaceous shrubs, plus birch.

Cladius pilicornis (was Priophorus pilicornis) – older records, plus more recent from Shotesham, Thetford and Ringstead. Larvae on hawthorn.

Cladius rufipes (was Priophorus ulmi?) – potential name confusion, but appears to be recorded from Eaton (1881), Gressenhall (1995) and Acle (2018), the latter as a larva on elm.

Cladius ulmi (was Priophorus laevifrons?) – potential name confusion, but appears to be recorded from Norwich (19th century), Redgrave/Lopham (1984) and Shotesham (2018). Larvae of this also on elm.

[Cladius grandis (was Trichiocampus viminalis) – no Norfolk records? Benson notes as throughout Britain, locally abundant, on poplar and sometimes willow. Surely should occur – perhaps not yet unpicked an old synonym?]

Tribe Dineurini

Genus Anoplonyx

The single species A. destructor was noted as not uncommon in the King's Lynn area in the early 20th century, but no recent records. Should be sought around larches.

Genus Dineura

Three species, two of which have been recorded from Norfolk. (A specimen previously identified as D testaceipes has subsequently been redetermined as not being that species). In the 21st century, D. stilata has been recorded from Thetford, Shotesham and Waxham.

Genus Hemichroa

Two species, both known from Norfolk but neither yet recorded in the 21st century.

Genus Nematinus

Five species, of which three have been recorded from Norfolk. In the 21st century, N. luteus has been recorded from Brandon, Hickling and Shotesham. No records yet of caledonicus (Benson notes as occurring sparingly in England, on birches) or steini (alders).

Genus Platycampus

The single species P. luridiventris occurs on alders and has a distinctive flattened larva. Recent records from East Walton Fen, Whitlingham, Acle and Weeting.

Tribe Hoplocampini

Genus Hoplocampa

[Hoplocampa alpina - no Norfolk records, a rowan-feeder and apparently a local species, but could well occur in the county]

[Hoplocampa ariae – no Norfolk records, a very local species on whitebeam which is probably not native to the county, hence the species perhaps less likely. Worth looking out for though.]

Hoplocampa brevis – Ken Durrant notes this species for west Norfolk in the 20th century, although location is not specified. No further records. Larvae feed on developing pears.

Hoplocampa chrysorrhoea – a few older records, plus in 2018 from Shotesham and Lynford. Associated with blackthorn.

Hoplocampa crataegi – recent records from Hunstanton, Hemblington, Holme, Acle, Wheatfen, Thetford and Ringstead; can be common around hawthorn.

Hoplocampa flava – 19th century report (but no specimens), plus a record of larva in Scole in 2004 (how to verify?) – associated with Prunus species. Benson notes as common, so not unreasonable.

Hoplocampa fulvicornis – (Benson’s rutilicornis) – strange lack of older records, but noted in 2017-18 from Thetford, Foulden Common and Holme. Feeds on blackthorn.

Hoplocampa pectoralis – older records, plus more recent from Thompson Common, Holme and Ringstead. Feeds on hawthorn.

Hoplocampa testudinea – older records, plus more recent from Scole and Norwich – a noted pest on apple.

Tribe Mesoneurini

Genus Mesoneura

Single species M. opaca occurs on oak. The only recent records have been from Roydon Common and Hunstanton, although Benson noted as 'common'.

Tribe Nematini

Genus Amauronematus - 24 spp

Genus Craesus - 4 spp

Four British species of which three currently recorded from Norfolk. Large for nematids. Sometimes called Croesus.

Genus Euura - 8 spp

Genus Nematus - 42 spp

Genus Pachynematus - 17 spp

Genus Phyllocolpa - 15 spp

Genus Pontania - 22 spp

Tribe Pristiphorini

Genus Pristicampus

[Pristicampus arcticus - Scottish species, no records from Norfolk]

Genus Pristiphora - 53 spp

Tribe Pseudodineurini

Genus Endophytus

[Endophytus anemones -  recorded only in UK in 1957, 1960, 1992(?), no Norfolk records]

Genus Pseudodineura

Three species, of which only P. fuscula has been recorded in Norfolk, for the first time in 2018 at Ringstead. [D. enslini is a northern species on Globeflower. D. mentiens only known from Scotland on Hepatica].

Tribe Stauronematini

Genus Stauronematus

Stauronematus platycerus (was compressicornis) - feeds on poplars or willows, and is notably for the larva surrounding itself with a 'palisade of dried saliva'. Ken Durrant noted it for both east and west Norfolk in the 20th century. The only more recent record so far is from Lynford in 2003.
